The Blumberg Family Legacy in Global Mining

The Blumberg family’s legacy in global mining dates back over a century to the founding of the Anglo American Corporation (AAC) in 1917 by the Oppenheimer and Blumberg families. From its early dominance in platinum and gold, AAC expanded into copper, coal, steel, and several other metals and minerals.  It eventually transformed into Anglo American plc in 1999, with a primary listing in London. Over the decades, Anglo American became one of the World’s leading diversified mining groups, and the Blumberg family has remained deeply connected to its evolution.

The Blumberg Family Trust continued its strategic involvement in Anglo American’s operations well into the 21st century, including playing a pivotal role in the restructuring of AngloGold Ashanti, a company originally spun off from Anglo American’s gold holdings. In 2020, the Trust acquired AngloGold’s remaining South African mining assets, concluding AngloGold’s domestic operations and positioning the Trust at the forefront of strategic asset management in the sector.

Philanthropy has been part of Anthony’s entire life, giving generously to organizations and causes in the United States and around the World. Tony is on the Board of Trustees of numerous philanthropic organizations and global charitable and conservation projects that encompass many diverse causes and initiatives. 

The  Blumberg family has also directed much of its philanthropic efforts towards preserving the heritage and cultural importance of the entire Sub-Saharan African region, as well as to broader community investment in the areas of health, education, nature conservation, and the arts.
